{"id":133064,"date":"2020-02-14T09:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-02-14T09:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/?p=133064"},"modified":"2020-02-13T14:01:15","modified_gmt":"2020-02-13T14:01:15","slug":"google-analytics-woocommerce","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/ecommerce\/google-analytics-woocommerce\/","title":{"rendered":"Correctly set up Google Analytics for WooCommerce"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>When you\u2019re running your online store with WooCommerce, getting GA to track the right data can be a bit of a hassle<\/h2>\n<p>As a cybernaut (great word, huh?), you probably feel like you don\u2019t need yet another motivational quote in your life - if you\u2019ve spent any time on Instagram recently, you understand where I\u2019m coming from - but as a marketer or entrepreneur, you know these particular words ring true.<\/p>\n<p>To do this \"measuring\" thing properly, we tend to follow the same recursive loop:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Set a goal<\/li>\n<li>Collect data via analytics tools<\/li>\n<li>Use that data to set a benchmark<\/li>\n<li>Implement a strategy to achieve the goal<\/li>\n<li>Track those metrics to measure progress towards the goal<\/li>\n<li>Find areas for improvement<\/li>\n<li>Make changes to your strategy<\/li>\n<li>Rinse and repeat<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Sound familiar?<\/p>\n<p>The most common analytics platform used by marketers for step two of that process is Google Analytics (GA). Then I\u2019ll show you how to properly set up Google Analytics to work with WooCommerce.<\/p>\n<h3>E-commerce metrics you should track in Google Analytics<\/h3>\n<p>There\u2019s some debate about which e-commerce metrics are worth your attention, as the \"right\" metrics can vary depending on your industry and order volume. With that said, from a pure \"revenue growth\" standpoint, there are a few metrics that are generally useful to track for all stores. After working with countless e-commerce brands, my team and I have found these <a href=\"https:\/\/jilt.com\/blog\/ecommerce-metrics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">e-commerce metrics<\/a> have the biggest impact and significance.<\/p>\n<h3>1. Sales conversion rate<\/h3>\n<p>How much of your site traffic converts to sales? Sales conversion rate (or just \"conversion rate\" or CVR) measures the percentage of visitors to your site who end up making a purchase.<\/p>\n<p>Studying conversion rate gives you a better idea of how your efforts (marketing, site design, paid advertising, etc.) translate into sales. You can track your conversion rate site-wide, for individual pages (like a single product page), or for specific campaigns (like an email marketing campaign).<\/p>\n<h4>Pro tip<\/h4>\n<p>Make note of big changes (like a new marketing campaign, product launch, or event) so you can correlate any increases or dips in your rate to external factors that may have influenced it.<\/p>\n<h3>2. Customer acquisition cost (CAC)<\/h3>\n<p>Logically, we\u2019d think that the more customers you acquire, the more money you\u2019ll make. However, while we\u2019re increasing revenue via better conversion rates, we need to look at cost, too. If the cost to get a customer is more than what they\u2019ll spend in your store, you\u2019ll find your accounts in the red.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why tracking your customer acquisition costs is so important. CAC is the ratio of total marketing spend to new or first-time customer count. If you spend $500 to get ten new customers, your CAC is $50.<\/p>\n<p>For most e-commerce stores, losing money to gain a new customer should be avoided. However, if there\u2019s a network effect to your product (such as a membership community or social component), this rule can be bent while you\u2019re in growth mode. It\u2019s also sometimes appropriate for startups in winner-take-all markets to lose money on customer acquisition in order to grow faster, but that\u2019s not likely the case for most e-commerce shops.<\/p>\n<h3>3. Customer lifetime value (LTV)<\/h3>\n<p>LTV projects how much revenue a customer will bring into your business throughout the lifetime of their relationship with your store. If your average customer spends $50, for example, and makes four purchases over two years, your customer LTV is $200.<\/p>\n<p>Figuring out accurate LTV requires a fair amount of historical data, but Google Analytics can project your LTV using other metrics, including revenue per user, sessions per user, and goal completion per user.<\/p>\n<p>Your LTV is important to track in relation to the CAC (CAC:LTV ratio). If you\u2019re spending $50 to acquire a new customer, but your LTV is just $25, that won\u2019t be sustainable for your store.<\/p>\n<h3>4. Average order value (AOV)<\/h3>\n<p>Do you know, on average, how much a customer will spend each time they buy from you? You may be able to guess which products will be purchased frequently, but knowing the order value of new purchases is a great metric for a store of any size, as it\u2019s one of the easiest metrics to track and influence.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-133188\" src=\"https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/AOV-analytics.png\" alt=\"AOV analytics\" width=\"974\" height=\"293\" \/><\/p>\n<p>With e-commerce tracking turned on in GA, you can get a detailed view of AOV (and the other metrics I\u2019ve mentioned so far, too).<\/p>\n<p>Increasing AOV is a primary goal for all e-commerce brands. Boosting average order value is an easy way to increase LTV and improve your CAC:LTV ratio. There <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sellwithwp.com\/8-strategies-to-increase-average-order-value\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">are a few strategies that we\u2019ve found to work well<\/a>, but you first need to know your current benchmark before you can take steps toward making it better.<\/p>\n<h3>5. Cart abandonment<\/h3>\n<p>There are many reasons online shoppers fill their carts with products only to walk away from them right before they\u2019re about to complete a purchase and not all of them are within your control. For many e-commerce companies, this metric can sting a bit because it means you inspired interest in your products, and maybe even did everything right, but the revenue was still lost.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-133189\" src=\"https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Cart-abandonment-message.png\" alt=\"Cart abandonment message\" width=\"443\" height=\"368\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Rather than focus on the negative, you can use this data to your advantage. Tracking data around abandoned carts, like your abandonment rate and where in your funnel customers are dropping off, can help you fix your site and know when and how to trigger remarketing campaigns or <a href=\"https:\/\/jilt.com\/upsell\/ecommerce-cart-abandonment-demystified\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">abandoned cart emails<\/a> to help recover that income.<\/p>\n<h3>How to set up Google Analytics for WooCommerce<\/h3>\n<p>Getting WooCommerce to report data to Google Analytics correctly can be the source of some serious irritation.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/membership\/basic-letter\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/si_blog_banner.png\" alt=\"Sign up for Free membership\" onclick=\"ga('send', 'event', 'Blog link', 'Click free membership banner', 'goal setting and evaluation');\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>One of the easiest ways to get WooCommerce and GA working together seamlessly and effectively as possible is to use the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyverge.com\/product\/woocommerce-google-analytics-pro\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WooCommerce Google Analytics Pro plugin<\/a>. This integration adds enhanced e-commerce tracking and monitors several events on your store (such as discount usage). There\u2019s also a <a href=\"https:\/\/woocommerce.com\/products\/woocommerce-google-analytics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">free version available<\/a> that does basic e-commerce tracking, though you\u2019ll miss out on tracking some events and checkout behavior funnels.<\/p>\n<p>These plugins streamline the process for sending data from your site to Google Analytics\u00a0and let you set up almost everything you need to start reporting to GA correctly from inside your WordPress dashboard.<\/p>\n<h3>Set up WooCommerce Google Analytics Pro<\/h3>\n<p>I\u2019m going to use the Pro version of the plugin for a couple reasons: it adds more detailed tracking data for e-commerce events, and it\u2019s built by my team at SkyVerge, so I\u2019m very familiar.<\/p>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve purchased it, upload the plugin within WordPress by going to Plugins &gt; Add new, then clicking \"Activate\".<\/p>\n<p>Now you\u2019re ready to connect your site to GA. Go to WooCommerce &gt; Settings &gt; Integrations and go to the \"Google Analytics Pro\" section (if it\u2019s not the first integration to show up). This is what you should be looking at:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-133190\" src=\"https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Setting-up-WooCommerce-in-Google-Analytics.png\" alt=\"Setting up WooCommerce in Google Analytics\" width=\"662\" height=\"931\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The two most important things to do here are:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Check the box labeled 'Enable Google Analytics Tracking'<em>.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Authenticate your connection by clicking on 'Authenticate with your Google Account' (use the Google account that owns your website\u2019s Google Analytics property) and following the steps.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Once you enable Google Analytics tracking, your GA account will automatically switch on a bunch of enhanced e-commerce data tracking features that make calculating and logging the metrics mentioned earlier even easier.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong> the plugin tracks the Event Names that are listed in the plugin settings by default. If you don\u2019t want to track a certain event, you need to remove the name from the input area and tracking will stop.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-133191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Google-Analytics-tracking.png\" alt=\"Google Analytics tracking\" width=\"593\" height=\"750\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Turning on checkout funnel tracking<\/h3>\n<p>With the Enhanced e-commerce feature turned on, Google will automatically turn on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyverge.com\/blog\/behavior-funnels-google-analytics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Checkout Behavior Analysis<\/a>, which is designed to let you see how your users move through your checkout process.<\/p>\n<p>WooCommerce Google Analytics Pro will automatically populate the checkout behavior funnel, and you can see the steps it will use by scrolling down to \"Checkout funnel\". As long as the event listed has a name in your plugin settings, it will be included in the funnel.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-133192\" src=\"https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Checkout-funnel-tracking.png\" alt=\"Checkout funnel tracking\" width=\"974\" height=\"393\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If desired, you can adjust event names, but it\u2019s not possible to customize which events are used or the order in which they happen. You\u2019ll want to create a funnel in your GA account that mirrors the one sent by the plugin. You can do so by going to your GA account settings and then clicking E-commerce Settings<em>. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-133193\" src=\"https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Event-funnel-set-up.png\" alt=\"Event funnel set up\" width=\"670\" height=\"508\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There you will find the Checkout labeling options and you can change them as needed.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-133194\" src=\"https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Checkout-labelling-options.png\" alt=\"Checkout labelling options\" width=\"650\" height=\"512\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019ve removed some events from being tracked in the plugin, you can remove the nonexistent steps in your GA account, too. Just make sure if you remove a step in GA that you disable the option in your plugin settings, as well.<\/p>\n<p>Once you have the right steps enabled in your plugin settings, you\u2019ll need to save the settings to make them stick.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re done! Your site is properly connected to Google Analytics to track e-commerce data from WooCommerce.<\/p>\n<h3>Monitoring your metrics<\/h3>\n<p>To wrap it up, let\u2019s bring this full circle: where do you find these metrics we talked about?<\/p>\n<p>To find your conversion rate as well as your average order value for a given time period, you\u2019ll want to visit Conversion &gt; E-commerce &gt; Overview in your GA account. This overview calculates conversion rate (transactions divided by total visitors) for your selected date range, along with your AOV.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-133195\" src=\"https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Conversion-rate-tracking-in-GA.png\" alt=\"Conversion rate tracking in GA\" width=\"974\" height=\"587\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Tracking customer acquisition cost isn\u2019t as simple, as Google likely doesn\u2019t have the data on your total marketing spend. I\u2019d recommend tracking that budget separately, then using the free <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyverge.com\/product\/woocommerce-new-customer-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New Customer Report plugin<\/a> for WooCommerce to determine the total of the new customer acquired in your date range to calculate this manually.<\/p>\n<p>You can get lifetime value from Google Analytics by going to Audience &gt; Lifetime value. However, note that Google will measure LTV (a) only over the last 90 days, as it anonymizes data older than that by default, and (b) for every visitor, not the purchaser. So, this can be useful to determine lifetime value per visitor.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-133196\" src=\"https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Lifetime-value-in-.png\" alt=\"Lifetime value in\" width=\"954\" height=\"812\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To determine LTV for customers, you\u2019ll likely need to do this outside of WooCommerce and GA. This is something we <a href=\"https:\/\/jilt.com\/blog\/new-dashboard-cart-regeneration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">track on an ongoing basis in Jilt<\/a>, or you could export orders for a given range and divide total revenue by unique customers (the <a href=\"https:\/\/woocommerce.com\/products\/ordercustomer-csv-export\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Customer \/ Order \/ Coupon CSV Export<\/a> plugin is handy for this).<\/p>\n<p>Finally, to track cart abandonment rate, check out the Conversions &gt; E-commerce &gt; Shopping behavior report. This shows you where customers drop off in your shopping funnel, and whether they\u2019ve abandoned on the cart page, or on the checkout page.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-133197\" src=\"https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Shopping-behaviour-analysis.png\" alt=\"Shopping behaviour analysis\" width=\"879\" height=\"633\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Since you\u2019ve stuck with me this long, here are a couple of bonus reports you\u2019ll find helpful. Don\u2019t forget that you can track checkout behavior in a more detailed way as well from Conversions &gt; E-commerce &gt; Checkout behavior. This is helpful to see your checkout abandonment in greater detail and to see which steps users complete before leaving your checkout page.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-133198\" src=\"https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Checkout-behaviour-analysis.png\" alt=\"Checkout behaviour analysis\" width=\"862\" height=\"616\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You can also get some of these insights at a glance from our dashboards in Jilt, especially for abandonment rate.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-133199\" src=\"https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Cart-abandonment-report.png\" alt=\"Cart abandonment report\" width=\"922\" height=\"650\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Final thoughts<\/h3>\n<p>That\u2019s a wrap! In total, it takes about eight to ten minutes or so to get a new site connected to GA and providing valuable metrics for your store.
