{"id":28349,"date":"2013-07-29T10:30:00","date_gmt":"2013-07-29T09:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/?p=28349"},"modified":"2013-07-30T08:22:34","modified_gmt":"2013-07-30T07:22:34","slug":"google-keyword-planner","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/search-engine-marketing\/keyphrase-analysis\/google-keyword-planner\/","title":{"rendered":"A briefing on the new Google Keyword Planner"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>5 key features and differences of Google's Keyword Planner<\/h2>\n<p>As many of you know, the <a title=\"Google keyword tool\" href=\"https:\/\/adwords.google.com\/o\/Targeting\/Explorer?__c=1000000000&amp;__u=1000000000&amp;ideaRequestType=KEYWORD_IDEAS\" target=\"_blank\">Google Keyword Tool <\/a>has been sunset and in some accounts has already been replaced by the <a title=\"keyword planner\" href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/adwords\/answer\/3141229?hl=en-GB\" target=\"_blank\">Keyword Planner.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>There has been much discussion (and disappointment) around this, as the Keyword Tool has, for many years, been the leading keyword research tool, loved by marketers SEO\u2019s, bloggers and copywriters<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/keyword-planner.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-28352\" style=\"border: 1px solid black;\" alt=\"keyword-planner\" src=\"http:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/keyword-planner.png\" width=\"600\" height=\"365\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/keyword-planner.png 600w, https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/keyword-planner-150x91.png 150w, https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/keyword-planner-550x334.png 550w, https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/keyword-planner-250x152.png 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>Google\u2019s launch of the Keyword Planner brings the functionality of the veteran Keyword Tool, combined with data from the Traffic Estimator. Clearly there\u2019s more focus on the needs of AdWords customers, and whilst it\u2019s not perfect, it will no doubt evolve as customer needs grow<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>To ease the transition between the original Keyword Tool and the Keyword Planner,<strong>we\u2019ve listed 5 changes Google has made<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3>5 New Google Keyword Planner features<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h4>1. Exact match is now the default<span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 1.2em; line-height: 1.5em;\"><br \/> <\/span><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>With the Keyword Tool, Google published broad match data by default (something I personally disliked). The Keyword Planner on the other hand\u00a0<strong>only publishes exact match<\/strong>\u00a0search volumes. If you want data for other match types you will have to create a plan.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/keyword-planner-match-types.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-28354\" style=\"border: 1px solid black;\" alt=\"keyword-planner-match-types\" src=\"http:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/keyword-planner-match-types.png\" width=\"600\" height=\"257\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/keyword-planner-match-types.png 600w, https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/keyword-planner-match-types-150x64.png 150w, https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/keyword-planner-match-types-550x235.png 550w, https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/keyword-planner-match-types-250x107.png 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h4>2. Average search volumes are higher and device data is combined<\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In the Keyword Planner, the average search volume data<strong>\u00a0will appear higher<\/strong>\u00a0when compared with the Keyword Tool.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>The reason for this is that the Keyword Planner publishes search volumes for desktops, laptops, tablets and mobiles combined, whereas the Keyword Tool showed separate averages for desktops versus mobile devices.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Google\u2019s motive for combining desktop, tablet and mobile data ties in with its new enhanced campaigns, which has better functionality for controlling bids and ads across devices.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h4>3. Average search volume displayed by city, region or country<\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Now you can target by city, region or country rather than just country, which is a real bonus for local businesses and local SEO and PPC research. You can also see global search volumes by targeting all locations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/keyword-planner-location-targeting.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-28356\" style=\"border: 1px solid black;\" alt=\"eyword-planner-location-targeting\" src=\"http:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/keyword-planner-location-targeting.png\" width=\"600\" height=\"334\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/keyword-planner-location-targeting.png 600w, https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/keyword-planner-location-targeting-150x83.png 150w, https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/keyword-planner-location-targeting-550x306.png 550w, https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/keyword-planner-location-targeting-250x139.png 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For this reason Google has removed the global and local search volume columns in favour of a single average monthly searches column that displays data based on your targeting settings.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h4>4. Search volumes by segmented by month<\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A neat feature of the Keyword Planner is the ability to see monthly search trends over the last 12 months.<\/p>\n<p>Roll your mouse over the graph icon to the right of each keyword and you will see a graph depicting monthly search trends. Whilst similar data is available in Google Insights, having this functionality in one tool improves UX.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/keyword-planner-monthly-segments.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-28357\" style=\"border: 1px solid black;\" alt=\"keyword-planner-monthly-segments\" src=\"http:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/keyword-planner-monthly-segments.png\" width=\"600\" height=\"337\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/keyword-planner-monthly-segments.png 600w, https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/keyword-planner-monthly-segments-150x84.png 150w, https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/keyword-planner-monthly-segments-550x308.png 550w, https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/keyword-planner-monthly-segments-250x140.png 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h4>5. Average CPC data more accurate<\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Unlike the Keyword Tool, the Keyword Planner displays CPC data by default. And Google claims that this data is more accurate as compared with the 'approximate CPC' data in the Keyword Tool.<\/p>\n<p>If you have suggestions on new features, we\u2019d love to hear your thoughts.<\/p>\n<p>I personally would like to see numerical data published in the competition column (as currently this is only available when downloading historical data).
