{"id":41297,"date":"2014-10-28T08:30:12","date_gmt":"2014-10-28T08:30:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/?p=41297"},"modified":"2014-10-28T08:30:33","modified_gmt":"2014-10-28T08:30:33","slug":"boost-lead-generation-visitor-tracking","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/customer-engagement\/customer-engagement-analytics\/boost-lead-generation-visitor-tracking\/","title":{"rendered":"How to boost lead generation using visitor tracking &#8211; a case study"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>How I boosted my lead generation with\u00a0visitor tracking software, in conjunction with\u00a0blogging, pay per click, email and social media outreach.<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">When you\u2019re growing an audience, and converting website visitors into customers, you need a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/marketplace-analysis\/customer-analysis\/consumer-decision-buying-process\/\">watertight marketing funnel<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The sad truth is that most of us convert less than 5 per cent of our website visitors into contacts, meaning that more than 95% of visitors leave our sites, potentially never to be seen again.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">So what steps can we take to improve our website marketing, tighten up our funnel, and generate more leads from what we have already? <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I faced this challenge earlier this year, and have written this post to share my experience with you.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">My website was only four months old, so I had insufficient visitor data in Analytics,\u00a0and\u00a0I was up against a tight deadline.\u00a0<\/span>My challenge was that I needed to generate more leads, more quickly from my website, and boost participation at a paid event I was running\u00a0just 6 weeks later. I was already doing a mixture of outbound and inbound marketing, including Pay Per Click (PPC), Blogging, email and social media\u00a0marketing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Here is what I had to work with:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span class=\"s1\">450 email contacts (MailChimp)<\/li>\n<li><span class=\"s1\">870 connections (LinkedIn)<\/li>\n<li>900 followers (Twitter)<\/li>\n<li>360 website users \/ week<\/li>\n<li>20% engagement or 80% bounce<\/li>\n<li>2 blog posts per week<\/li>\n<li><span class=\"s1\">PPC Google campaign<\/li>\n<li><span class=\"s1\">Event landing page on Eventbrite<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I needed my blogging output, email and social media outreach to boost traffic to my website and improve my top line visitor engagement metrics: Page views, session duration, and page depth. The results were <span id=\"b3132612-8bde-4b5e-a571-52dd137ed58f\" class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span id=\"8f84b24d-4cd8-42c4-9bf4-d8f4c689dfba\" class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span id=\"2c9b7b49-2b4a-4ef3-aa61-3f7d3bf64f8f\" class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span id=\"ee648f0b-5309-43c7-8ac6-315ab8c5b50c\" class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\">favourable<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>, as evidenced in Figure 1.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_41302\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Screenshot-2014-10-19-13.24.15.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-41302\" class=\"wp-image-41302 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Screenshot-2014-10-19-13.24.15-700x322.png\" alt=\"how to view visitor engagement in google analytics\" width=\"640\" height=\"294\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Screenshot-2014-10-19-13.24.15-700x322.png 700w, https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Screenshot-2014-10-19-13.24.15-150x69.png 150w, https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Screenshot-2014-10-19-13.24.15-550x253.png 550w, https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Screenshot-2014-10-19-13.24.15-250x115.png 250w, https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Screenshot-2014-10-19-13.24.15.png 846w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-41302\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span id=\"5db020a5-adc8-464e-9f3e-b8f6450f6a68\" class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span id=\"b9ef8819-2938-45b0-899a-3ae4d53b9a8a\" class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span id=\"bf0f7ebb-7424-425b-b5ff-00dde6c903fd\" class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span id=\"16b41641-1782-4fe1-a87a-b3ea73797612\" class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\">Blue lines<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> show performance uplift during inbound \/ outbound marketing <span id=\"d5368377-2c54-451d-bab6-8189f4338eb5\" class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span id=\"2904b9ff-c8dc-42f5-a72c-2873f2a8d441\" class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span id=\"727ff539-91ae-4879-813c-c7fd652f4f81\" class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span id=\"92c4b9fb-596a-4745-9e30-a2fcebfc6f8f\" class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\">programme<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\">I was able to monitor and measure the efficacy of my posts, tweets and emails in Google Analytics, MailChimp and <span id=\"0130266a-fa97-4e2a-ba58-534708ad1559\" class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span id=\"5855d8c8-ec39-4654-b861-8f04ee80cb20\" class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span id=\"c18186e2-5456-413d-9255-068cc69692de\" class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\">SocialShare<\/span><\/span><\/span>, but I also wanted to identify my warmest prospects and see their engagement and interest, once they arrived on my website.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">I wanted to be notified of their return in real time, so that I could reach out to them at the most opportune time, when they were more receptive to a\u00a0call from me.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Timing was the key and I wanted to contact prospects within just minutes of them visiting my website, or better still whilst they were on my website. This is where online and offline complement one another, as long as the timing is right. The success factor is\u00a0\"Relevance\", <span id=\"acea391e-16bb-4ae0-9daf-c1e189f9530b\" class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\">a<\/span> the one marketing quality I keep coming back to, time and again.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The solution I wanted, needed to help me\u00a0do the following:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>1. Understand as much as possible about returning visitors<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span class=\"s1\">Who is returning to my website? What channels are they coming from? What geographic location? What <span id=\"aaa53b3e-7a48-4813-814d-2ed1b407aeee\" class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span id=\"92250f52-0808-4709-a633-3949f803d875\" class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span id=\"a0185eee-dacc-4ad6-b570-38d2ff364192\" class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span id=\"18634a02-9a70-4a23-b158-9b84c956c133\" class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\">organisation<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> and sector? What pages and activities are they completing? How long are they dwelling? What is their visitor flow? <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>2. Understand their interests<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span class=\"s1\">What are they most interested in? What can I deduce from the content they\u2019re consuming? What have they missed in their journey through m<span id=\"af0d85d5-2209-48b2-9338-e9df8f73ec15\" class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\">y<\/span> website?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>3. Who <span id=\"b0d38bdf-fcea-4ee0-8832-ed0cad3a35ab\" class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\">are<\/span> my warmest prospects? <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span class=\"s1\">Who can I contact based on return rates, time on site, activities, page depth, visitor profile? What insight can I use to justify my\u00a0call to them?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>4. Who is it safe to call?\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span class=\"s1\">Which visitors can I call or email using the insights I have about their <span id=\"85ea2dca-4ff3-4d9f-b9a0-b06a04d17548\" class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span id=\"f990ed79-7317-4400-b13f-e32126557af8\" class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\">organisation<\/span><\/span> and interests? Who might need answers to questions that they cannot get on the website? How can I <span id=\"15abafdb-11de-45f5-bc8e-7c97da738c5d\" class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span id=\"a6823026-d255-46ff-8d25-5a7497aafb45\" class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\">personalise<\/span><\/span> my call based on my experience with similar clients and relevant case studies? <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">After some research I chose <a title=\"Canddi homepage\" href=\"http:\/\/www.canddi.com\/?utm_source=smartinsights&amp;utm_medium=blog\" target=\"_blank\">Canddi<\/a> visitor tracking, partly for its affordable price, but also because the client support team <span id=\"dd6e3bd7-c0f8-4246-80c4-aa941e564ac9\" class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\">was<\/span>\u00a0so helpful and friendly, in helping me set the code and monitoring dashboard up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">As soon as I began using <span id=\"a352160b-22b7-415d-8e21-087fa6b74de2\" class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span id=\"fef5936a-315b-42ae-a6d4-191869028132\" class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\">Canddi<\/span><\/span> in conjunction with my blogging activity, PPC, and outreach I became acutely aware of the\u00a0benefits of visitor tracking when used properly:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Suddenly I was able to track the <span id=\"117c2df5-15cb-4994-8496-7e56170e1f71\" class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span id=\"f773151c-d5d9-4709-8664-b8f5419512b3\" class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\">behaviour<\/span><\/span> of my email subscribers beyond open and click <span id=\"f49323a8-c587-4894-9eaf-93db72e0ff7f\" class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\">through<\/span>, and see what they were doing when they landed on my website. <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I could see, research (via LinkedIn) and focus on my warmest prospects, and reach out to them first, in a timely fashion, when they were most receptive to a conversation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It removed fears I had of rejection, now that\u00a0I was confident in the knowledge they were interested in the event I was running. <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I was able to move more visitors into my prospect funnel and convince\u00a0more of them that the event was right for them.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Here is an example of the sorts insights\u00a0I was getting:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Screenshot-2014-10-20-12.26.28.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-41312\" src=\"http:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Screenshot-2014-10-20-12.26.28.png\" alt=\"visitor tracking insights\" width=\"600\" height=\"529\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Screenshot-2014-10-20-12.26.28.png 600w, https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Screenshot-2014-10-20-12.26.28-150x132.png 150w, https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Screenshot-2014-10-20-12.26.28-550x484.png 550w, https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Screenshot-2014-10-20-12.26.28-250x220.png 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The software provided me with an update on returning visitors in my stream and prompted me to seek them out. After a few days I added\u00a0a \u201chelp\u201d capsule that popped up in front of browsing visitor after they completed their third visit. This prompted the visitor\u00a0to ask a question they were otherwise unable to find an answer to on the website. This was helpful when I was not on my screen, since it ensured the visitor was prompted to move a step closer to identifying themselves.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Post <span id=\"5c4c30aa-c634-49eb-8e47-8e8d88a80e50\" class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span id=\"b6a30780-6590-49ac-919c-d6fc9e9615aa\" class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\">scriptum<\/span><\/span>:<\/b> Canddi have since introduced a new benefit: Users can now add Canddi tracking into every outbound email they send from their regular email host (<span id=\"ca050bff-329f-486a-ae07-95dd4eb9da3f\" class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\">e.g.<\/span> Gmail), using a simple Chrome extension, which sends a notification popup each time a recipient opens an email and clicks on a link within it.\u00a0This is like Signals, the Hubspot version of the same.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Thanks for reading.
